Companion in Space
I became an avid Firefly fan after reading about the canceled TV show on the Business Summit Blog. In that entry, Teresa mentions I remind her of Inara Serra, the sci-fi show's high class courtesan (Thanks Teresa!)
Firefly was a well written, edgy and fun space western. It made it to the big screen with the release of full feature film Serenity. You can still purchase individual episodes on iTunes and Amazon.com
Enjoy the clip! Now I can go back waiting for the new season of Battlestar Galactica :)
Jet Set Lara, exploring the Science of Pleasure ;)

Thanks for recommending Firely to me a while back, Lara. I have since watched the entire series, and it is high up on my list of great finds for the year.
The thing I love most about Inara's character is her unfailingly polite irreverence. She never fails to speak her mind, yet always does it with such rhetoric finesse as to make her statements palatable rather than confrontational. If there's anything real-life companions should learn from her, that is it.

A client once gave me as a gift Elizabeth Priloeau's book Seductress: Women who ravished the world and their lost art of love. It's about powerful women throughout history, some of them courtesans, and their art of seduction...

Definitely one of the best series ever. And the backstory on the courtesans (that they're liaisons required for a ship) made it even more interesting. I was curious about the training, so I read Memoirs of a Geisha, which the actress playing Inara, Morena Baccarin, said she read to prepare for the part. Lara, do you have any books that you have read in regards to being an escort?

I’m a big fan also. I love Jayne’s antics, Wash’s sarcasm, Zoë’s strength, and Malcolm’s leadership. But one person really caught my attention. Inara. I see in her the same qualities that I like to have in myself. Elegance, class, sensuality, virtue, and charm. I really admire Joss Whedon’s decision to give Inara, a somewhat taboo profession, and portray it with class.
Inara was the model I used for my service. I had been toying with the idea of companionship for quite a few years and I was impressed with her class and style. It was exactly how I had envisioned myself. Beautiful clothes, Turkish rugs, velvet curtains, big fluffy pillows, soft candles, a warm fireplace, and incense. A very intimate and sensual encounter with a beautiful and elegant woman. That is how I wanted to present myself. So I did.

Jet Set Lara likes Firefly?! I knew we must have something in common! :))) Joss Whedon also did Buffy, and as popular as that show was, I still prefer the cancelled one. I think it had more scope, and Serenity is just gorgeous.

Also, the sad part about that filmclip is it leaves out the best bit.
I'll be in my bunk.

Dude. That is awesome. I love, love, LOVE firefly. Not Serenity as much, it's a bit watered down for me, but Firefly owns my soul. I just bought an awesome badge that says 'come on baby, don't fear the reavers.' It's like, double geekiness - you have to like both seventies music AND firefly to fully get it.

Hi Inara...I mean Lara :-)
I'm honored that you liked my post. I've since learned that your career is not illegal in the UK, which is fantastic. I wish Americans were as high-minded as the British in this regard.
If you are so inclined, we would love to have you at the Blog Business Summit conference this October. You have my e-mail address if you'd like to talk about it.
Cheers!
